Breathtaking beauty offers a superb escape from hustle n’ bustle
WHEN the owners of this Allens Rivulet property first set foot on it 17 years ago, they instantly fell in love.
Back then it looked rather different to the fantastic home that takes pride of place today. Initially there was a rough track crossing a winter creek that leads to what is now the house site.
“The first time we experienced the breathtaking views over the Allens Rivulet valley to kunanyi and Cathedral Rock, it was the feeling of complete serenity and calm as we sat taking it all in — it made us feel that we were home,” the owners said.
The couple worked with designer Nigel Jones and builder Robert Gordon to craft a well-insulated, solar-passive house with the emphasis on the spectacular northerly views from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living areas and master bedroom.
“Our focus was on sustainability, and no expense was spared in establishing orchards and raised vegetable beds that are protected from the local wildlife,” the owners said.
“The 24 solar panels generate far more power than we use, and there’s a certain pleasure about ringing Aurora and asking for a cheque each quarter for the excess power sold to them.
“Our motto is ‘do it once and do it well’, so although we’ve outlaid a considerable amount to realise our dream, we know everything’s been done properly.
“We drink beautiful clear rainwater caught from the roof, and we have significant water storage. In fact, even after a long summer of keeping our fully irrigated gardens lush and green, we have never run out of water.”
On the approach to this four-bedroom home set on more than 20ha of land, there is a palpable sense of intrigue and drama.
A single-car-width drive leads up and up past tall trees before opening out to the wide, vast views of the surrounding areas, bushland, pasture and the mountains beyond — it packs a real punch.
Just past the electric gate, visitors will see the first hint of the high level of attention to detail that this property exhibits at every turn. Stone walls curve in a similar shape to the fence line and the exterior of the home.
The lawn? Impeccable.
The chook shed? Looks more like an artist studio.
Everything about this house is bound to impress. From the views from the ensuite tub to the Ilve appliances in the kitchen, there is something impressive to discover around each corner.
From the entrance, to the right is a fantastic kitchen with high benchtops.
Thick 10mm double-glazed and tinted windows and walls, which were designed to provide a thermal mass, ensure a comfortable year-round temperature.
To find the bedrooms, take a delightful stroll along the light-filled gallery to the accommodation. Each has built-in storage, with the master suite the highlight with its designer bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.
EIS Property consultant Alison Rogers said the things that had captivated her about this property were the intricate details such as the fossils in each of the stone steps at the rear of the property, and the choice of landscaping materials.
“The view is mesmerising, as is the way the property immerses with nature to provide a rejuvenating retreat all year round,” Alison said.
EIS Property consultant Edward McKay said one of the most striking things about this property was the homeowners’ perfectionism.
“As you walk around the property you can clearly see that they have created a truly special home,” he said. “They have poured heart and soul into it and every possible detail is millimetre-perfect, well-considered and highly functional.”
Outside there is a terrace and entertaining area that will be a perfect location for alfresco dining.
The property has a three-bay garage and a four-bay shed to house hay and rural supplies.
The covered orchard and vegie garden are home to organic produce.
Trying to lock the owners down to just one or two “best features’’ might have been an unfair challenge. From the cosy warmth to the views that leave a “feeling of serenity washing over us”, this home has so much to offer. Ultimately, they adore the “complete privacy and quietness that is so good for the soul”.
This property is listed with EIS Property at “Offers over $1.6 million”. The address is available by request and inspections by appointment.
