Canberra residents are the happiest in the country
Australia’s capital has been ranked the most liveable city for a third year in a row, new data shows.
The realestate.com.au Life in Australia Index report, powered by Ipsos, asked Australians to rank 16 factors they seek in their ideal location, along with how well they feel their city delivers in these areas.
Canberrans rated their city highest across the board against these criteria, giving it an overall liveability score of 62.3 out of 100 – higher than the national average of 59.3.
Perth came in second with a residents’ rating of 60.
Canberra residents were most satisfied with their feeling of safety (64%), affordable, decent housing (57%), high-quality health services (57%), good job prospects (41%) and high-quality education opportunities (38%).
Interestingly, Canberra was the only capital city to include education in its top five factors for liveability.
Nationally, the five most important attributes to Australians were feeling safe (67%), high-quality health services (60%), affordable, decent housing (58%), good job prospects (41%) and reliable and efficient public transport (33%).
Adelaide has also jumped two places since last year’s survey to take the third spot, influenced by a growing economy and increased job prospects.
Brisbane residents reported feeling less safe, and a decline in affordable housing saw it rank fourth for liveability.
Hobart dropped three places this year, with rising housing costs dropping its ranking to fifth.
Although it’s considered one of the world’s most liveable cities, Melburnians only rated their city sixth – reporting feeling less safe, despite statistics showing a steady decline in crime.
Climbing house prices and tighter lending conditions aren’t endearing Sydneysiders, with ratings from locals placing the city in seventh spot.
Darwin sits at the bottom of the list with locals rating it the least liveable capital city in the country. The median house price sits at $442,000.
The Life in Australia survey was conducted in October 2018.
