Converted stable behind mansion built by Northcote mayor for sale
A converted stable at the rear of an Italianate mansion built by a former mayor is up for grabs in Thornbury.
The stable-turned-apartment at 8/6 Francis Grove is part of the Benvenula estate and has a $329,000 price tag.
The mansion was built in 1885 by former Northcote mayor Thomas Hicks McLean, and later sold to prominent shoe manufacturer Charles Trescowthick.

Most of the mansion’s grounds were built over in the 1920s and bungalow-style properties now surround the estate, according to the Victorian Heritage Database.
The mansion, with heritage overlay, has been split into three and there are up to 24 apartments behind it.
Woodards Northcote’s Andrew Guarino said the grand house was one of the oldest buildings in Thornbury.
The stables made way for apartments many moons ago, he said.
“The apartment (that’s for sale) is on the ground floor and it’s a bit larger than average,” Mr Guarino said.
“One of the main attractions are the old steel windows which look out to greenery — you aren’t looking out of a brick wall.”
The one-bedroom apartment features an open-plan living and meals area, and a kitchen with storage and black splashbacks.
It also has hardwood floors, a bedroom with mirrored wardrobes, and split-system heating and cooling.
Mr Guarino said the property would be best suited for first-home buyers.
“The first inspection had four groups and three were young, first-home buyers,” he said.
“Because of stamp duty concessions, first-home buyers would pay zero stamp duty. And it is harder for investors to get a loan.”
The property last sold for $83,000 in 2001, according to CoreLogic data.
