Holiday at home and entertain in the finest of style at 47 Blythewood Rd, Mitcham
Waking up to the sound of kookaburras and the sight of koalas in the trees is not a perk exclusively reserved for Hills residents, as Karen and Craig Bruce have found.
The couple have enjoyed these and much more from the Blythewood Rd, Mitcham property they bought in 2016, attracted by the home’s cul-de-sac position and potential as a mid-century modern marvel.

Is this SA’s best beachfront house?
“The location was a huge attraction – when we bought it my two older girls were at Walford and my youngest was at Scotch, so it was perfectly located for that,” Mrs Bruce says.
“We also loved the outlook – we’ve got magnificent views of the city and my favourite thing to do is watch the storms and watch the lightning roll in – it’s incredible.
“I love the house year-round and it’s great for entertaining in summer, but it’s really special in winter.” The couple have since renovated the property throughout, placing their own touch on it to bring the home into the modern era.
“We’ve spent a lot of time and money reinvigorating the house,” Mrs Bruce says.
“It’s been given a full makeover. Quality was really important to us – we had an architect and an interior designer help us so that everything was done well. The lounge area has a huge heater that heats the whole area and that alone cost us $12,000, so we spent the money to get the result, but the house warranted it and it was worth spending the money on it.”
Set over an 1147sqm allotment, the home offers five bedrooms, five bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on the ground floor opening to a portico for outdoor entertainment, a home office, a large upstairs balcony and a covered terrace with an outdoor kitchen overlooking the inground swimming pool. It also has a separate studio with a bedroom, an ensuite and a living area; covered parking for four vehicles, and is surrounded by established landscaped gardens.
“We’re a family of five and in this house we each get our own bathroom,” Mrs Bruce says.
“Of all the home’s I’ve lived in, this one has been the most family friendly. Having the kitchen slightly separated from the family and meals area has been a godsend, because, having older children, they tend to congregate in the kitchen, so they can be in the kitchen while we can be relaxing or entertaining in the lounge undisturbed.
“A lot of our time is spent outside – we’ll have breakfast out there and have a cup of tea on the balcony upstairs. It would be perfect for another family – it’s a big place with lots of room and everybody gets their own space.”
Mrs Bruce says the home’s layout and multi-level design makes it ideal for entertaining. “We’ve hosted the girls for their end of year celebrations there with 90 kids – it’s an incredible property to entertain in,” Mrs Bruce says.
“At a lot of modern homes you can’t sit around the pool because they’re fenced, but this is resort-style and you can have eight people relaxing around the pool while others swim.”
Mrs Bruce says as stunning as the home is, its surroundings are pretty special as well.
“It’s so close to Brown Hill Creek where Craig does a lot of mountain bike riding,” Mrs Bruce says. “It’s so close to the city and schools, but it’s so peaceful – you hear the kookaburras and birds in the morning, you see the koalas in the trees adjacent our home all the time, and when you wake up in the morning and draw the curtains all you see is greenery.”
With one daughter off to university interstate and another leaving home, Mrs Bruce says the time has come to downsize.
