New apartment block to create new housing options in Hobart

A NEW apartment complex proposed for the heart of Hobart will help cater for growing inner-city housing demand, if approved by Hobart City Council.

The proposed development is for a six-storey building at 190 Macquarie St, between the Duke of Wellington Hotel and St John’s Presbyterian Church.

The plan involves the demolition of the existing single-storey building and construction of seven apartments over six levels with a basement level car park.

The apartment block will be 19.6m high.

It will have six levels with two two-bedroom apartments on the ground floor and five three-bedroom apartments across levels 1-5.

JMG Engineers and Planning lodged the development application to Hobart City Council.

“The proposed development will create short-term job opportunities in the Hobart area,” the application says.

“In the long-term the development will provide new housing options that bring people into the

Hobart area and close to the amenities and opportunities within the CBD.”

An existing 10m tall walnut tree on the strata title, listed on the Hobart City Council Significant Tree Register, will be retained.

The application goes on to say that the proposed contemporary building has been designed to visually recede from the traditional facades of the adjacent heritage buildings.

“Together they offer a positive contribution to the streetscape and a complimentary composition of old and new buildings within the site,” the application says.

“The proposal has been assessed against all relevant performance criteria and found to be

acceptable with respect to the planning scheme requirements and therefore ought to be

supported by the planning authority.”

There will be a total of 10 carparking spaces on the site with three spaces allocated to the block at the front of the site.
