Once rowdy Collingwood pub a sign of changing times

With last drinks over 100 years ago, the former pub is on the market for over $2 million.

If the walls of this old Collingwood pub could talk they’d share some colourful stories.

The circa-1873 former Carter’s Arms Hotel at 31 Gold St was one of eight venues whose licenses were revoked by the Licenses Reduction Board in April 1914, The Argus reported.

It followed complaints from residents who said their “slumber was disturbed … by members who (sang) ribald songs, make use of vile language, and misconduct themselves generally.”

The Carter’s Arms Hotel closed in 1914, and has been converted into a family home.

Nelson Alexander agent Alexander Hill said when the Temperance Union successfully lobbied for the closure of drinking establishments in Collingwood, almost one in two pubs closed down.
He said the building had been used as a factory, office space and family home renovated by Workshop Architecture.

It is now on the market with a $2-2.15 million price tag.

“A young family have owned the home since 2009 and staggered the renovation over 10 years,” Mr Hill said

“They are environmentally conscious and spent a lot of money on (energy efficient) features.

“The high quality renovation really sets it apart from other homes.”

Two large bedrooms, a versatile office and a bathroom with a freestanding bath and walk-in shower surround the family room.

The main bedroom with a retreat and dressing room, dining area and custom kitchen are upstairs.

The living zone opens with French doors to the entertainment terrace with retractable awnings.

There is scope to divide the home into two luxury apartments.

Mr Hill said the vendors were sad to leave the area they loved so much.

“The property suits young families and couples, as well as downsizers,” he said.

“It really depends on what you want out of the home, because it is quiet versatile.

“And the location, close to Smith and Gertrude St, speaks for itself.”

The property will head under the hammer on June 22.

It last sold for $871,000 in April 2009, according to CoreLogic.
