Soak up the sea breezes in this family entertainer at 1 Park Ave, Semaphore South
Restoring this four-bedroom home in the popular suburb of Semaphore South has been a labour of love for vendors David and Beth Black.
The couple bought the Park Ave property last December and have spent the last seven months transforming it. “We gutted the house completely and extended it,” Mr Black, an electrician, says.
“We’ve rearranged all the walls … and redone the whole front, the yard and put a garage on the side and changed the facade. Beth’s an interior designer, so she does all the design and I organise all the construction.”
Mr Black says the original 1950s house was ripe for a revamp.
“It was actually quite well constructed – it had good bones – but was impractical for modern living,” he says. “It had a very small kitchen, a bathroom without a toilet – the toilet was outside in the laundry … it just wasn’t practical.”
It’s the second home transformation the couple – who live in a warehouse conversion in nearby Port Adelaide – have completed in the area and they are already planning a third.
Mr Black has close ties to the LeFevre Peninsula. “I actually grew up in the area and went to school at LeFevre High School, which is at the end of the road from where this house is.”
He says Semaphore is a booming suburb, with much to offer. “It’s got everything, without being too commercial,” he says. “And this home is a three-minute walk to the beach, which is patrolled during summer … and close to schools and the (Glanville Hall par three) golf course.”
As such, Mr Black says it would be ideal for a “family that likes entertaining”, with its outdoor area and butler’s pantry helping making catering easy. “It would be a nice place for kids and grandkids to come back to,” Mr Black says.
Now replumbed – including gas, sewerage and stormwater – and rewired, complete with smart home lighting control, the home features high-quality fixtures and fittings throughout.
Set on a huge 905sqm block, the home has four double-size bedrooms, all with built-in robes and quality carpets. The master also boasts a stunning ensuite with tiles, a double vanity, a huge shower and a toilet.
The main bathroom has a freestanding bath, a separate shower with a waterfall shower head, a toilet and sparkling designer tiles. Other internal highlights include the bright open-plan family, dining and kitchen area, and a formal lounge which features double Art Deco doors, a gas log heater and plush carpets.
The contemporary kitchen and adjoining butler’s pantry is complete with a 900mm stainless steel cooker, a dishwasher, two double sinks and stone benchtops, while a breakfast bar provides a perfect place to get the day under way. Outside, a large, north-facing tiled alfresco area with downlights and ceiling fans will help make entertaining easy, while a high 2.5m clearance drive-through carport with panel-lift auto-roller door will be perfect for boaties.
The home also has off-street parking for an additional four vehicles, while the property also has manicured front and rear gardens.
Mr Black says neighbours have been incredibly supportive of the project.
“A lot of the older houses are getting knocked over and they’re putting in two boxes on each block, so the neighbours are very happy – we’ve got so many positive comments about it,” he says. “Every neighbour that has walked past said what a fantastic thing it is that we’ve kept it and renovated it rather than bulldozing it.”
And he’s hard pressed to choose a favourite aspect of the renovation: “There’s so much I like about it to be honest … I think we’ve outdone ourselves on this one,” Mr Black says.
