If it’s a safe, friendly community you’re looking to be a part of, look no further than McLaren Flat, in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, says personal trainer Sharee Sterzl.

Mrs Sterzl and husband Shane bought in Spring Cres 10 years ago, attracted by the suburb’s family-friendly lifestyle and country feel.

“We’d lived in Happy Valley before then and we loved the idea of feeling like we were in a rural area but still connected to local shops and not far away from major shopping centres,” she says.

8 Spring Cres, McLaren Flat is on the market with Harcourts Wine Coast. It has an asking price of $635,000 to $645,000.

“We had a young family at the time and wanted somewhere safe they could grow up and get that real community feel. This was a new estate at the time and we were one of the first to build in here, and funnily enough once we did that we had a lot of our friends fall in love with the area and follow us. A lot of our friends now live either in our street or within a short distance of us.”

Mrs Sterzl says the suburb offers perks normally only associated with Hills or country living, despite having cafes, shops, wineries, primary and secondary schools and a number of parks and green spaces on their doorstep.

1&2/57 Main Rd, McLaren Flat is on the market with Southgate Real Estate. It has an asking price of $489,000 to $499,9000.

“We’ve got kangaroos literally jumping down the street, they actually do that, and we’ve got a resident koala here too, but we have all the perks of suburban living,” she says.

“McLaren Flat is changing and growing and I think it’s going to continue to do that because a lot of the people who come here will probably stay, so it will change all the time.”

According to CoreLogic, house prices in McLaren Flat have increased by 8.8 per cent over the past three years.

Harcourts Wine Coast selling agent Carly Frost said the area’s affordability made it a popular choice for families.

“You get a lot of land for your money and that’s really attractive for families looking for space,” she says. “It’s also a really popular option for people downsizing from acreage – you can live on 1000sqm without feeling boxed in.”
