The Block 2019 episode 25 recap: Is this the best Block bathroom ever?
This week’s uncomfortable homophobia row is now well and truly over. The more distance Mark and Mitch put between last Sunday and this Sunday, the more perspective they get.
And that perspective is an interesting one.
“I think the experience we have had growing up, and even in the last 12 months during the same sex marriage debate, makes us just a little bit cautious and very aware,” Mark says. “In this case I think we were maybe a bit…”
“Over aware,” Mitch says.

What really goes on behind the scenes at The Block
And with that, Scott Cam feels free to resume his ribbing about the pair’s party floor, a moniker they now appear willing to embrace.
This week they’re not doing a master ensuite like all the other teams. They’re doing a kitchen and bathroom to service the aforementioned party space. They’ve also decked out their three storey lift shaft in wallpaper that has Neale Whitaker salivating, immediately identifying it as being from the Parker Hotel in Palm Springs.
None of the judges particularly like the glossy yellow subway tiles and white swirly mirror in the bathroom, but agree the details somehow all work.
Neale describes it as “chutzpah” and lauds them for their “bravery”. (Neale seems to have a different definition of that word that the dictionary, but there you go).
But Shaynna Blaze says the time has now come for their neighbours Tess and Luke to stand up and start asking questions about what provisions Mark and Mitch are going to make in terms of acoustics and noise abatement, given the facilities that are now installed on this level share a party wall with Tess and Luke’s master bedroom.
“Their neighbours need to stand up and say something,” she advises.
Tess and Luke have had a great week, breaking the glass on the one-time-only Hi Pages free labour lever. The army of tradies finishes off the pair’s lift shaft and create a stunning bathroom with terrazzo floor, matte navy cabinetry and basins, a hidden loo and large format subway tiles laid vertically.
Unfortunately, there was a mix up with their glazier, and the big window next to the shower is clear, not frosted, meaning anyone having a shower would deliver a peep show to the people across the road.
The judges, who love the bathroom, sympathise, but have to mark them down, even though the window will be frosted by the next day.
The judges are blown away by Andy and Deb’s secret weapon, a bath that fills from a tap hidden in the ceiling, looking for all intents and purposes like a down light. They also appreciate the fact there’s a light hidden behind the bath, giving it a relaxing ambient glow, and they love the custom cabinetry by the pair’s nephew.
Their only real criticism is the fact the shaving mirrors are smoked glass.
“You could actually walk out and look like a clown,” Shaynna says of the impractical choice.
El’ise and Matt have divided their space in order to put in a powder room for people using the terrace, but the judges think the sacrificing of space in the master ensuite is a mistake.
They also think the pair’s bath is too small, though they’re all in ecstasy over their use of Venetian plaster. Darren Palmer looks like he wants to date it.
They’re equally excited by Jesse and Mel’s bathroom, declaring it the layout of the night.
It features a toilet behind frosted glass — just like a hotel room — an enormous shower screen, marble look tiles and their trademark chrome fittings, which have seen them marked down in previous weeks.
“They’ve actually turned me back on to chrome,” Neale says.
They lose points for bad lighting layout and for using a bog standard basin mixer.
But the shock end result is Mitch and Mark for the win, the second time they’ve won by doing something other than what they’ve been assigned to do.
“That hurts,” Jesse says. “I’m thinking I can win kitchen week by doing a powder room.”
