This Rose Bay Susan Rothwell $20m beachfront ‘forever home’ is a Sydney dog-lover’s delight
Sydney locations don’t come much better than this — the back gate of 5 Collins Ave, Rose Bay opens directly onto a northwest facing sandy beach.
And if the family owns a dog — or is planning to get one — you’ll all be in seventh heaven as this is one of the east’s favourite dog-friendly harbour beaches.
As the Sotheby’s International managing director, Michael Pallier, says: “This is a forever home offering an enviable beachfront lifestyle with the convenience of level access to the shops.”

Even better, this house — on a level 705 sqm block — was rebuilt only four years ago and designed by the leading architect, Susan Rothwell.
It’s an incredible beauty in manicured gardens.
And during my visit on one of these recent sunny winter afternoons, it was a joy to take a seat in the lounge and gaze out at the view of the city skyline and Harbour Bridge in the distance and the ferry chugging past in the foreground.
The front section of the house — originally two rooms — was completely opened up during the internal rebuild to take full advantage of this dream outlook.
The most recent owner, the late Susan Feller, OAM, worked closely with Mrs Rothwell to make it unique.
The 180mm floorboards are 100-year-old oak wagon boards imported from France. And instead of marble, Ms Feller insisted on zinc for the benchtops in the galley kitchen. Zinc is both attractive and non-porous so therefore easy to clean. The Lacanche oven is another exclusive inclusion from France.
The front rooms are heated by a Jetmaster gas fire and there’s an identical one in the cosy family room in behind the home office.
The LED lighting in the three-metre ceilings is a nice touch. And there’s a similar effect in the impressive steel curved staircase at the heart of the home.
But you can also take the five-person lift to the two levels above.
The home has five bedrooms — three with an ensuite (there’s also a powder room downstairs). The master has a sitting room, marble ensuite and a private terrace.
Young kids will love the bespoke design of two of the bedrooms, with their bright decorations and bunk beds.
On the top level, the guest suite has a balcony with spectacular harbour views.
The property is for sale in an expressions of Interest campaign closing September 3.
It’s open for inspection on Fridays and Tuesdays, noon-12.45pm.
The price guide is $20 million
